Review of Tell Your Children (1938) by Tom R — 16 Sep 2011
I don't know why I gave Reefer Madness a star rating because it's a movie that's almost unrateable. It's an insipid, stupid film that's unintentionally funny with time and it belongs on your shelf next to Troll 2 and The Room.
Whether you're pro, anti, or indifferent of marijuana, anyone with basic drug education knows that reefer's effect as its portrayed in the film is very erroneous. It was made in the 1930's, so it has a "they didn't know any better" feel to it.
I believe you should see Reefer Madness for a few reasons though: it's very much propaganda, so it's educational to watch and see what propaganda looked like in the 1930's. This film is a part of history.
But the main reason you should see Reefer Madness? It's so stupid it's funny. It contains awkward dialogue and some of the worst overacting/underacting and the stuff that marijuana does to the characters is hysterical.
Plus, it has the school principal, a very unintentionally funny, stick-up-my-a*s character who bookends the film and is only there to look like an evil scarecrow. I am not supporting marijuana by criticizing the vapidness of the film, but Reefer Madness is a bad movie.
.. and you should see it.
