Review of Tell No One (2006) by David R — 01 Nov 2010
I'm surprised by all the adoration this movie got when it was released. It's well-filmed and well-acted, yes, and the footchase through cafes and across freeways is pretty impressive. I also think the relationship between Alex and his wife was nicely established in a few early scenes. But as a mystery-thriller, I'm not sure this movie ever really plays fair.
The HUGE exposition dump towards the end of the film walks us through some interesting twists, but almost none of that knowledge is earned or pursued by the hero in a way that allows us to follow along and try to piece things together for ourselves. Much of the film tracks Alex's attempts to flee authorities, but he doesn't really discover much along the way, until the script requires that some resolution be reached: a resolution that involves culprits who were (for the most part) never allowed enough screentime and characterization for us to care much about them.
