Review of Tekken (2010) by Cody M — 16 Aug 2010
Uninspired sci-fi martial arts flick based on the video game, set in a Dystopian future where giant corporations rule the world and stage a colourful fighting tournament for some reason. Into this turnament comes young Jin (Jon Foo) who is out for revenge again the head of Tekken Corp for killing his mother.
Standard issue stuff is better than expected thanks to halfway decent fight chirography and a refreshing lack of wirework, but is seriously hampered by the paint-by-numbers story and is lacking the goofy charm that made Mortal Kombat enjoyable.
Foo looks the part as the hero but lacks charisma and acting ability, while Luke Goss (Blade 2, Hellboy 2) gives a better performance than the flick deserves as his self-appointed coach. Kudos to Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa for keeping a straight face in that awful bleached fright wig he is forced to wear.
