Review of Tekken (2010) by Oscar P — 24 Aug 2010
Usually the worst videogame adaptations are live action ones based on fighting games (Mortal Kombat 1 & 2, Street Fighter), but sometimes one stands out above the rest (DOA). Tekken is easily one that stands out above the worst ones.
A straight to video release, part sci-fi martial arts movie which sees a future world in the year 2039 ravaged by multiple World Wars causing governents and militaries to become defunct. Instead, 8 global corporations have control over the world as we know it, the most powerful of which being Japan's Tekken organization.
When the Tekken corporation announces it is hosting the annual Iron Fist tournament, young fighter Jin Kazama (Jon Foo) enters to gain revenge on Tekken's owner Heihachi Mishima (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) for the death of his mother Jun (Tamlyn Tomita).
An interesting take on the fighting game franchise sees a good 1st half, but waivers slightly as the tournament makes its way to a finale which turns up the violence and action but disappoints in terms of story.
All in all, an enjoyable enough movie with enough stunts, action and backstory to enjoy.
