Review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023) by Mrdeven — 02 Aug 2023
Let’s start off with one thing: this film won’t be for everyone. There are going to be people that will say it’s too dark, too violent, too ugly, too icky and too “hip with the youth” to be considered a substantial experience.
And you know what? That’s okay!
The fact that Jeff Rowe and his team decided to embrace all of those things is a bold, BOLD swing for an animated movie such as this. The turtles sound and more importantly ACT like 2023 teenagers, cringe and all. Characters throw up on-screen for long amounts of time. Explosions can and will kill people. The grit and grime of NYC during the nighttime is exploited to its fullest potential.
Mutant Mayhem is many things, sure. But the best thing about it in my mind is that it is unabashedly itself, and that alone is a defiant green middle finger to the current rise of AI in the entertainment industry.
