Review of Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo (2006) by Greg R — 29 Jan 2018
Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo is both a competently made family-film and a loving tribute to all things Japanese. It is no secret that much of the style of Teen-Titans is inspired by Japanese anime, and nowhere can this be seen more than in this film.
Every time the film tries to make a visual gag using the animation style, it genuinely works, and I found myself laughing at Beast Boy a few more times than I would've expected. Of course, the fact there are multiple characters does mean that the story is more a mishmash of subplots, but that's to be expected from TV films.
Robin, Starfire and Beast Boy all have satisfying stories. The mystery was very predictable, as were any jokes that were not visual. You knew the twist 20 minutes in. The homage to the Japanese can also be seen in the film's climax, using a Godzilla like character.
It is wonderfully over the top. A good film, a great teen-titans episode.
