Review of Ted Bundy (2009) by Tristan P — 31 Jul 2008
Matthew Bright is a good director, but this film takes absolutely the wrong approach. Rather than looking for any answers to what made Theodore Robert Bundy kill anywhere from 33 to over 100 women, the film simply tries to make him look like a fool as often as possible (see the scene where he steals a tree...). Bundy was like a real life Hannibal Lecter, and the film would have been better off treating him with a kind of awe. Michael Reilly Burke was a very poor choice to play Ted; he looks nothing like him and cannot project a threatening tone whatsoever (not that the film as is requires him to...). Rob Lowe, who looks a LOT like Ted Bundy and has the distinct advantage of being a good actor, was evidently offered the role but turned it down. Shame.
The horror geek in me was thrilled to see Tom Savini and Tiffany Shepis, but I was really hoping for something a lot more substantial from this.
The definitive Ted Bundy film has yet to be made.
