Review of Ted (2012) by Gimly M — 25 Nov 2013
Ted is not exactly my type of film. It's an American Comedy, which is a strike. It's feelgood, which is a strike. It's main role is played by Mark Wahlberg, which is a strike. In my books these are the case at least.
That said, I still more or less enjoyed Ted.
I was stoked to see during the opening credits that Joel Fucking McHale (of Community "fame") was starring. I went into the cinema without a clue that this was the case. He essentially plays the same character he always does, but it's fabulous to see him getting work. Fantastic.
Mila Kunis has always been somewhat of a favourite of mine, and though this particular role was hardly a shining star for me, it was still good to watch her on the big screen again. But Patrick Stewart's incredibly minor role as the narrator, absolutely fucking owned the movie for me.
Towards the latter end of the film, Ted sort of... forgot that it was meant to be a comedy. As I've stated many times before, I tend to despise American comedy, so this was fine for me, but I can understand that this would frustrate many viewers who essentially came to see a Family Guy spin-off on the big screen. Here, Ted is at it's most warm, which was honestly a positive note. Though the premise itself is silly, Ted at least manages to hold on to some semblance of cohesion, and soldier through its more intense aspects.
Ted, was not a fantastic film. It lacked enough oomph in any one department to really enthral me completely, or to hold a special place for me, anything like that. But apart from being "adequate", Ted, if nothing else, shows that Seth Macfarlane is more than just a one trick pony, and we can still expect his work to remain "not all together terrible" in the future.
59%.
