Ted 2 is a perfectly serviceable sequel very much in the Seth MacFarlane-mould. As with Ted, it is simply Family Guy at the movies with a televisual, episodic feel to it. Expectedly crude, thankfully its gags hit more often than they miss but there is less charm this time around and dry spells abound when the film attempts courtroom drama, takes in an aimless road trip and when it throws in a dash of medical drama.

My main criticism is that it is very self-indulgent. MacFarlane packs in references, cameos, entire scenes and characters and even musical sequences that do not add to nor enhance the story rather come across as stuff he wanted to see made and took the liberty to include.

As I share some of his interests, I should have enjoyed, for example, the parade of costumed characters during the Comic Con sequence but instead I found these moments distracting and it took me out of the story as I thought, "Oh yes, Seth MacFarlane likes Star Trek, that's why she's in it or they're there.

" Whilst Family Guy often thrives on its cutaways and non-sequiturs, Ted 2 simply does not handle these as well, especially as it tries to pass them off congruously within scenes. Still, I laughed, Walter Murphy's soundtrack is excellent and Liam Neeson is superb.

Oh and be sure to stay to the end of the credits.
