Review of Tears of the Sun (2003) by Chris G — 02 Mar 2013
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.".
A truly heartbreaking and utterly emotional triumph, a film that's guaranteed to hit a soft spot with its unique ability to induce emotion. A stirring, emotionally draining and truly electrifying film that really delivers on all sides. A strenuously tense, stupendously suspenseful, fantastically crafted, absolutely mesmerizing and wickedly engaging powerhouse on a cast level. Critically acclaimed as well as one of my personal favorites, visionary Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, King Arthur, Shooter, Brooklyn's Finest) has crafted a bold, powerful, brave, brutal, breathtaking and invasive military thriller that's sure to get your blood boiling and stir up some raw emotions. Tears Of The Sun is powerful filmmaking at its best, Fuqua and company sift through various controversial, yet all too human emotions and concepts and by carefully doing so they have delivered a spectacularly hard hitting film. The story is simple enough, but the filmmakers added multiple layers of human emotion, intense human emotion at that. I found myself getting angry while watching this film, not because I didn't like it, but because of the film's ability to induce that kind of raw emotion. Tears Of The Sun is not for the faint at heart, it's brutal, it's disturbing and its not for everyone, but with that being said, I enjoyed it immensely. A riveting, action lacked, cerebral, diabolical, engaging, suspenseful, emotional powerhouse of a film. It's just another fantastic film in a long line of many that highlight the career of Antoine Fuqua.
Bruce Willis is excellent in a powerfully convincing performance that probably had a considerable emotional till, I mean this stuff was hard to watch at points. Willis is a talent that few actors can strive to these days, the man can deliver in any role, and that's rare. Cole Hauser, surprisingly, delivered throughout as well. Monica Belluci was great as well. Two thumbs up for a powerful cinematic experience.
