Review of Tea with Mussolini (1999) by M F — 04 Aug 2009
A great feel good Franco Zeffirelli Movie. I have like a lot of Zeffirelli movies. He has made some fantastically beautiful (cinematography wise) movies. I was young and will never forget how powerfully Romeo and Juliette influenced me.
He has made a lot of movies and dvds about opera. This is a feel good movie with a nice ending. A bunch of ladies are dealing with the war fascism and and Mussolini. you might want to look up Lady Hester Random on wiki.
This film the BAFTA Award 2000- Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role; Maggie Smith. Some other great stars are in this movie Mary (Joan Plowwright), Arabella (Judi Dench), Lady Hester (Maggie Smith), Elsa (Cher) and Georgie (Lily Tomlin) This movie reminded me some of the Merchant Ivory productions.
This film by Zeffirelli one portraying cultured expatriate British women. I saw this on the big screen 2000 and at home a few months ago. Ten years old it does not seem dated. Zeffirelli can make some timeless films.
four stars highly recommended.
