Perhaps shock is like surprise, If you are aware of it, it cannot grab you. I do think that you need to be aware or the exact type of shock or surprise for this to ring true however. I was told that Taxidermia was shocking, horrifying, grotesque.

I was not told why, I knew nothing of the story but I still did not find it to be moving in any way. I was not shocked or horified, nor did I have any sypathy or empathy with any of the characters. It was an interesting piece of film making from a human perspective, but I did expect a lot more out of it than a pervert, a glutton and an old science fiction plot.
