Review of Taxidermia (2006) by Joel D — 01 Aug 2009
I went into this film thinking it would be some sort of quirky yet imaginative foreign film on par with Delicatessen but it turned out to be something completely different. Something off-putting, disturbing, disgusting and sour, looking for laughs or shocks (i wasn't sure which) through inane acts of gross depravity. Not for the faint-hearted or weak-stomached, that's for sure.
It's funny, because when I was younger I used to seek out films like this for the very reason it now disgusts me. Salo, Santa Sangre are two that come to mind that drew me to them because of their notoriety and controversial nature, however with Taxidermia it was just unsettling and that could say more about the person I am now than the film in particular. I just didn't see a whole lot of point to it.
I give it 2 stars simply due to it's originality.
