Review of Taxi to the Dark Side (2008) by Peter T — 27 Feb 2009
Cracking documentary from the makers of Enron The Smartest guys in the room.
This film deals with Americas treatment of prisoners in its camps across the globe and how the death of one innocent man in Bagram lead to the opening of a can of worms which uncovered rendition and torture tatics which went far beyond Geneva conventions.
Director Alex Gibney interviews the soldiers who contributed to the death of Dilawar ,and shows how they were given no direction by their superiors and were made to carry the can after the facts became known.
The knowledge that something was wrong reaches as High as President Bush who chooses to Dismiss the allegations made and hangs on the word of Cheyney and Rumfeld who were just as culpable.
The film will make you angry and will also make you think about how goverment seeks to change the rules of engagement when the security of a country is threatened.
The problem here as Gibneys film shows is that by torturing and abusing prisoners we create more terrorism than we prevent.
A sobering lesson for future regimes all over the world.
