Review of Taxi Driver (1976) by Dr. J — 02 Feb 2014
Though not as technically impressive as RAGING BULL, TAXI DRIVER is the first masterpiece from auteur Martin Scorsese. Schrader's gritty writing, Chapman's subjective photographing, Scorsese's cynical directing, and DeNiro's impeccable acting all contribute to this study of the psyche of a mentally decadent man. Foster, too, delivers a compelling performance, and Shepherd is as beautiful as ever. Herrmann - having devoted all his efforts into his last score, a musical manifestation of Travis Bickle's soltitude - finishes off Scorsese's ultimate masterpiece, TAXI DRIVER.
One of my 3 favorite films of all time, alongside VERTIGO and THE THIRD MAN.
#9 on my list of all-time greatest films.
