Review of Taxi Driver (1954) by Ryan M — 21 Apr 2013
While I was watching this movie, I (sometimes simultaneously) felt both hate and sympathy towards Travis Bickle. Is he a hero or a villain? Mentally challenged or mentally disturbed? Urban vigilante or just another piece of street trash that he rails against? This is Bickle's movie, and, therefore, Robert De Niro's movie.
Sure, Cybill Shepherd and Jodie Foster are outstanding in their roles, but De Niro is utterly fascinating in his part. A perfect character that was perfectly cast in what is perhaps a perfect film with a perfect ending that is perfectly infuriating in all of the right ways.
