Review of Taxi Driver (1954) by Tommy H — 18 Apr 2015
Taxi driver is one of the most raw and cynical movies of the 70's. It's about a man who sees ugliness everywhere he looks and it turns him into an anti-hero. It's a lot like Death Wish with a bigger scope and a more complicated and meaningful plot.
The man feels dead inside because he sees everything as dead, so to feel something real, to feel alive, he goes to extreme measures. He does it because he feels no escape from his torment. The romance with Cybill Sheppard represents that he's so broken he doesn't even know how to escape through love.
The political scenes shows that he can't escape by putting his faith in anyone to save the city. The movie says in an angry world anger is the only way out. It says things have to change before we lose our humanity.
We are all products of our environment.
