Review of Taxi Driver (1954) by Marc R — 08 Feb 2016
Scorsese brilliantly visualizes and evokes the inner workings of a damaged outcast, turning a psyche and its increasing madness into one of great, sustained nightmares in the cinema. De Niro is haunting and intense as Travis Bickle, one of the great film characters, who guides us through a hallucinatory vision of personal and societal decay.
Its depiction of a certain sort of whiteness and masculinity maintains its dirty, toxic resonance even in the face of a cleaner New York. Schrader's poignant screenplay reaches the outcast in us all.
It's a Great American Movie.
