Review of Tarzan (1999) by Kevin L — 21 Oct 2011
THE GOOD.
- Gorgeous animation, Disney's most expensive looking film!
- Tarzan's one of Disney more complex heroes. Jane's personality was also a welcome change from the usual Disney females. Not sure about the chemistry between the two, but they make good friends.
- Tarzan vs. the leopard is the new Greatest Fight in Disney history. Truly one of the best Disney villains without saying a word.
- A great, fleshed-out ending.
- Something really different about this film, some of it is trademark Disney, but a lot of it isn't.
THE BAD.
- One of the worst openings ever: within 3 MINUTES, Tarzan's parents get shipwrecked, set up a home in the jungle, Kala's kid is killed, Tarzan's parents are killed, and Tarzan is discovered and adopted. 3 MINUTES!! Imagine how insignificant Mufasa's death would've been if he was killed in the first 3 minutes.
- Phil Collins music . . just not a fan of Phil's work. I think they should've gotten a band from Africa to keep the sounds authentic.
- Jane's father is a comic relief dud, and Clayton is one of the most boring villains of Disney kind.
THE INTERESTING.
- How does Tarzan know how to say his name in English?
- How does Tarzan learn how to tie a tie in a few seconds? It took me months to learn how, and I'm still not good at it! :P.
