Review of Tarnation (2003) by Tyson S — 23 Jun 2007
Tarnation is a very interesting documentary style narrative film. Very visually stimulating, most of the narration is captioned with snippets of old videos, pictures and recordings that follow the filmmaker's childhood, accompanied by decent soundtrack with a few originals.
A haunting gilmpse into the story of Jonathan Caouette, a homosexual foster child with a mentally-ill mother. The intesity of this film is sure to keep you watching. Hints at american society/ideology and the effects of a dark adolescence and dysfunctional family experience.
The film is high-paced and at times a bit too hyper with the visuals, but in the end a really unique viewing experience and an original account of a real person in a real situation. Sad, vigorous, alarming, inspiring and vehement, definitely recommend it for those looking for something different.
