Review of Targets (1968) by Gabriel P — 02 Feb 2008
Am I the only person that thinks whoever was responsible for the Targets poster was trying to trick the audience into thinking it starred James Stewart? A more important and pressing question is certainly why, oh why, doesn't Bogdanovich direct pictures today? Is it because he truly believes all the good pictures have been made? I doubt it.
It's a fascinating and well constructed picture about topics timeless and endlessly intriguing for me. It's both a picture made before it's time and long after it's time. It's amazing that Bogdanovich is able to cobble together a picture of such depth and meaning out of such disparate elements and with such restrictions.
He is a grand director. I would trust his judgment concerning film above just about anyone else alive today. He knows a good idea when he see its, whether it's in a classic Hollywood picture or in script editions from his friend Sam Fuller.
