Review of Tape 407 (2012) by Brian B — 18 Oct 2018
*Spoiler Warning*.
Nothing special, but I didn't hate it like most other people do. I think it cleverly utilized the found footage aspect, because since the creature isn't shown that much (the film only reveals a couple glimpses of it throughout), it shows that the horror of what's unseen can be just as terrifying as what's seen due to the implication of what's pursuing them. In addition, I liked how they developed Charlie. His character started off as the generic asshole who you despise and hope to see killed off, but the film provided more depth to him when the film continued on, so I ended up rooting for him, even though I knew he'd die. On the other hand, however, I thought that, other than Charlie, all the characters weren't that interesting, and I didn't care for their fates that much. Also, there were a couple infuriating moments such as Laura's death as it seemed lazy and as if the writer's were running out of ideas of creative kills. Finally, I'm not sure if the decision to reveal what the creature looked like at the end either helped or hurt the film. Still, I thought this was a pretty competent film, and while I'm likely never gong to watch it again, I'd be fine with recommending it to fans of its genre.
