Review of Tape (2001) by Steve S — 11 Jan 2010
***1/2 (out of four).
Directed by Richard Linklater, "Tape" proves that you don't need multi-characters or a wide variety of locales to make an intriguing and original film. All you need is some added creativity.
Adapted from the play by Stephen Belber, the film takes place in one setting (a motel room in Lansing) in actual time. Vince and John haven't seen each other in ten years. They reunite and go over old times, but they also bring up old animosities that threaten to sink into violence. It only gets worse when the woman they are arguing about shows up as well.
Clever dialogue and realistic performances from Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Robert Sean Leonard make this a winner.
