Review of Tank Girl (1995) by Jonathan B — 18 Aug 2012
Tank Girl has issues. Most of the criticisms you'll see here are true. The filmmakers said it was horrible to make, and there are moments so campy that you may reach for the fast-forward button. And still, the pastiche sum fantastically represents a certain style of 90s film making.
Along with movies like The Fifth Element, Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrman), and Demolition Man, Tank Girl exists at the pinnacle of a period when absurd, hyper-stylized romps penetrated the mainstream box office.
It is at times funny, beautiful, and visually stunning. I can say with certainty that Tank Girl does not succeed because of considerate film-making; still, it is fun and worthwhile entertainment both thanks to and in spite of its cinematic excess.
