Review of Tangled (2010) by Trevor R — 10 Nov 2014
A vibrant, hysterical, fun, beautifully animated adventure; Disney's best in years. Mandy Moore is a delightful comic actress and a gifted singer, and Zachary Levi brings great energy and comic timing to the often tired rogue-with-a-heart-of-gold character-- even as the inevitable romance is just as trite and rote as expected (although even I must acknowledge the arresting majesty of the lantern sequence).
The concept of "Disney Princesses" as their own billion-dollar brand has made me a bit cynical, but at least Rapunzel has a streak of personality and drive typically lacking in this sort of character. My main gripe with the film is the flatly unsentimental way the character of Mother Goethel is handled from start to finish-- Donna Murphy's performance is deliciously evil, but it just highlights the baffling absurdity of Disney's resolute refusal to ever dramatize a mother-daughter relationship in any sort of real way.
Regardless, "Tangled" is a fun and breezy film; an enjoyable effort and somewhat of a return to form for the studio.
