Review of Tangerine (2015) by Luke S — 31 Jul 2015
4 out of 5 stars. An indie classic, shot entirely on an iphone 5. That's not just a gimmick though. This is a well written, well shot & entertaining feature film, from a writer/director, Sean Baker, who's won a ton of awards for his indie film work.
Shot on the streets of L.A., mostly at Santa Monica & Highland, he shines a light on two subcultures, transvestite prostitutes & Armenians, that are rarely seen in films. The two leads, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez & Mya Taylor, are hilarious as they run through their comic/tragic lives.
Gritty without being gross, the film doesn't hold back from showing the dark side of their world with drugs, hustling & police. The music is excellent too, with sharp editing to keep it all moving.
Funny with heart, this is a film well worth seeking out, with a unique take on a lifestyle many would find abhorrent. Original, fast and impressive, Sean Baker is a confident filmmaker to watch.
