Review of Tangerine (2015) by V H — 08 Aug 2015
Sin-Dee and Alexandra are transgender hooker pals who begin their Christmas Eve day by sharing a pastry at a Hollywood Donut shop. Sin-Dee's just been released after a month in jail and when Alexandra foolishly lets slip that her pimp/boyfriend has been busy cheating on her with some new white bitch, an enraged Sin-Dee sets out on a mission to hunt them both down. As the girls race from one seedy neighborhood haunt to the next, Alexandra alternates between trying to calm her friend down and handing out flyers promoting her one-woman show later that evening.
"Tangerine" is in turns funny, sad, and sweet. It's more about friendship than anything else -- the friends just happen to be hilariously-profane tranny hustlers.
Much of the buzz surrounding this film has to do with the fact that it was shot using a trio of iPhone 5s, but I didn't know this when I saw it and it certainly wasn't apparent. Though this feat of technology may help garner it some extra attention, "Tangerine" stands on its own high-heeled boots without any gimmicks.
