Review of Tangerine (2015) by Thomas C — 26 Dec 2015
Now this is an interesting film: a small independent film starring two transgender actresses, filmed entirely on modified iPhone 5s. Its unconventional filmmaking techniques blew everybody's minds when it first premiered at Sundance Film Festival.
I have to say I didn't find that particularly groundbreaking, in fact, there were a lot of moments in the film that seemed like straight out of home-video cameras, which often took me out of the experience.
But what makes this film going, what grabs us from the get-go is the realistic and surprisingly heartfelt story about minorities living in a big, crowded city, and when that's combined with the two strong lead performances, vibrantly colorful visuals and effectively in-your-face score, it becomes pretty engaging to watch.
I did find the last act quite exhausting, partly because it was chaotic and so many things were happening all at once, but up until that point I was genuinely hooked. "Los Angeles is a beautifully wrapped lie.
" I couldn't agree more. Tangerine is a unique indie.
