Review of Tangerine (2015) by Joey T — 05 Sep 2015
A truly unique, one of a kind movie with great breakout performances all around. Mya Taylor is great and Kitana Rodriguez is great but was a little over the top in some moments that made it unbelievable, but only a few times.
I liked the "all in one day" story structure but there were things in the movie that could have been cut that weren't essential to the plot. It just started to drag towards the end and for an 88 min movie, it felt over 2 hours.
The whole sub plot with the taxi driver just got in the way with the rhythm and the pacing of the movie, It has a reason by the end but the movie would have been better if that plot line wasn't weaved in to the far more interesting plot line.
The screenplay is really wonderful and real and the cinematography is cool with it all being shot on iPhones. You forget that mid way because it looks so good. Sean Baker does a really great job directing this.
The movie felt very episodic especially with those taxi cab sequences in between but like I said, without those scenes the movie would have flowed a lot better. This is definitely worth seeking out either in theaters or when it comes out on DVD.
