Review of Tampopo (1985) by David S — 10 Sep 2007
One of my personal favorite comedies, this surreal and strange comedy from Juzo Itami is simply hilarious if only due to its sheer lack of logical coherency... in other words, this film is straight up crazy! Now, that is not to say this film lacks intelligence and feeling, in fact nothing could be further from the truth.
Itami places within his film characters that exhibit strong emotions, namely in their passion for both food and for one another. In addition, Itami films with such a lush, even sensual, filming style that truly communicates that the director was in love with this production, and that feeling is soon translated to the audience who begins developing similar affection for the picture.
Told in a series of vignettes that demonstrate different relationships people have with food, the film never stops providing the laughs. And, for the intellectually-minded, the film is very much self-reflexive, not only on film itself but also upon the filmmakers (ie.
characters become personification of director, etc.). Truly, this is a wonderful and lovely film that you can not help yourself to fall in love with... if you get a chance to see it, do so!
