The plot demands that the pigtails come under the guardianship of a wealthy family who, in spite of themselves and courtesy of Tammy, are made to realize that the antebellum era had intrinsic self-serving value.

Life was simpler when people knew their place and all that mattered was getting your first real kiss.This is Technicolor mystification and revisionism.
