Review of Tammy (2014) by Mirza Mohd S — 13 Oct 2014
Since Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy has been one of my favorite comedians! Yes, she does vulgar and hilarious things like a female bloated version of Adam Sandler (not when he is dressed as women!), but her style of physical comedy which really makes laugh out loud! Unfortunately this film looks like she has already run her course & has nothing new to deliver.
The film is actually not all bad, it sure has its moments, but the thing is like many comedies these days, the best moments are shown in the trailers and what is left over will certainly not make you laugh but frown.
Mostly, I don't think this film even classifies as a comedy on many levels, as it was more an aimless road trip drama most of the time! I personally don't feel McCarthy is in that place in her career where she can really, consistently, humanize a character while balancing out the fact they are supposed to be funny, just like Zach Galifianakis failed in Are you here (Check out my review here)! Which perhaps is the main pitfall of McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone writing, and Falcone directing, this film.
For when it comes to films McCarthy has been in thus far, you can see that those involved knew how to utilize her talents. Her performance here is stale and boring. Susan Surrandon is wooden, 1stly a grand mother! Seriously? over playing her part, by saying non funny outrageous things, with little or almost no purpose to her character! Overall, Tammy is a long boring road trip of an insecure women with her grandmother, which goes so far without finding a halt or an exit, while questioning your insanity for selecting to watch this horror!
