Review of Tamara Drewe (2010) by Nik T — 17 Sep 2010
A tricky film to classify. Not exactly a comedy although there are some laughs and comedic characters. Some drama, but until the rather silly melodramatic ending, not much really happens. Very enjoyable performances from the always excellent Tamsin Greig and the usually slimy Roger Allum. The film is almost stolen by the 2 young teen girls who lurk around the village getting into mild mischief. While the film bowls along quite entertainingly, it doesn't seem to know what sort of film it is, and the ending really is silly, and feels tacked on. Gemma Arterton is surprisingly anonymous for a title character, not especially sympathetic or well drawn.
Amiable but aimless.
