Review of Tamara Drewe (2010) by Jean E — 08 Nov 2010
Set in the British countryside, the cast is predominately full of writers at a retreat, trying their best to accomplish a bit of pen on paper. Enter Tamara Drewe - young, lush, semi-innocently sexual... Add a bit of good, comic writing; some very good acting by all the players; some cleverly inter-twined story lines and you have a recipe for a very feel good funny movie.
Two teen aged girls act as our guides between scene changes, with there comments on each set of story lines hysterically funny at times (especially when you can understand everything said with the very heavy accents).
Everything works, some better than others; even the caricature rock star, who is a bit over played throughout, gives a wonderful scene toward the end with one of the teenagers, who happens to have a VERY heavy crush on him (read: I'll do anything to have your children).
Smiling throughout, sometimes laughing out loud with the rest of the audience; toward the end, you begin to wonder - however can the film makers tie this all up neatly, without some lame deus ex machina ending? Well, add in one part accidental manslaughter, a cattle stampede, a neighbor with a gun, a distraught widow, turned willing lover to one of the guests... Suffice it to say, the ending was developed nicely and was a fitting end to a very good film.
