Review of Tamara Drewe (2010) by Dickie L — 17 Nov 2010
Tamara Drewe feels like British television from the 70s. All thats missing is the sight of the local vicar stumbling into the supposed hilarity. Its not the kind of low brow material you'd expect from the director of The Queen and Dangerous Liaisons.
The biggest problem with Ms Drewe though is the titular character. A story can sometimes get by with an unsympathetic lead, but this one is so unappealing and uninteresting that it leaves little opportunity for audience investment.
It also leaves a nasty taste in the mouth that the filmmakers actually expect us to root for her. This is pretty broad, shallow stuff. Some relief can be had in a handful of engaging peripheral characters and the occasional bon mot, but the cons far outweigh the pros.
Very disappointing.
