File this under, "I should have listened to Mark Kermode". The tone is very uneven. To me it looks like they skimped on the shooting and didn't quite film enough reverses. This resulted in a very choppy editing style which did the actors no favours at all.
Gemma Arterton I'm afraid was miscast in the title role - the Tamara drew of the cartoon is much sadder and thinner. Likewise Tamsin Grieg is much better looking than the frumpy original of the cartoon.
