Review of Tamara Drewe (2010) by Bob L — 21 May 2011
This light and fluffy (if occasionally dark) piece of English Country Whimsy is pleasant enough, but quite disposable. Gemma Arterton has plenty of moments to perv over here (as we and the characters are supposed to) but is the stereotype of 'the bad townie' in the village.
The cast do a great job here, even when the plot starts to get ridiculous (except Roger Allam as a 'rock drummer' who is appalling). The one 'star' here is Tamsin Greig as the belittled housewife who runs a retreat for authors next door to Tamara.
Not brilliant, and probably over hyped at the time, this film is fun, cute, very 'English' ,and just right for a Sunday afternoon killing of a few hours.
