Review of Talk to Me (2007) by Steven N — 22 Sep 2009
I'm confused as to why exactly this movie got such good reviews, because I'm going to be honest with you, it seemed just a little bit terrible to me. "Talk to Me" is the true story of former two time loser turned entertainment sensation in the late 1960's, Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene.
The afros are high, the skirts short, the music hot, and yet the film is neither high, short or hot. Instead it's just blah. Unimaginative blandness spreads over this film like buttermilk syrup over a short stack of pancakes.
I've seen made for television movies that looked sharper. Don Cheadle is good in the lead but he's getting help from absolutely no one, including the director. The script misses the mark as well.
Don't get me wrong, it's not incomprehensible or anything, but it's lacking emotion and the emotion it does try to give you feels forced and sloppy. I like Don Cheadle. I think the man more often than not is involved with good, quality projects, but he should have passed on this one.
The fact that the director attached was best known for "Eve's Bayou" and some episodes of "Walker Texas Ranger" should have been the first clue that maybe he should try and convince the produces that Stepford Don his evil robotic doppelganger was actually the one who signed the contract and not he.
