Review of Talk to Me (2007) by J D — 05 Apr 2008
Excellent biopic with two stellar performances by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Don Cheadle. These are a couple of my favorite actors, and it's great seeing them play off each other here, the more conservative Ejiofor perfectly complementing the more "street" Cheadle.
Along the lines of "Good Morning, Vietnam" but a lot more raw, this shows the power that radio can have (for the good. Juxtapose this with another great Don Cheadle movie, "Hotel Rwanda", where the radio helped to incite genocide).
And while this is a tale about how a man used his gift of "keeping it real" to transform his life from an ex-con to a powerful voice of the people, it's also a tale about friendship. Cheadle and Ejiofor both turn in Oscar-worthy performances as two men from the same side of the tracks and how they learned to accept who they were in their own unique ways.
Excellent flick.
