Review of Talk to Her (2002) by Lisa M — 03 Jan 2010
Talk to Her is a fantastic film, but I definitely have to disagree with Almodovar (the master himself) that it's his best. While it does have a fantastic screenplay and fascinating characters that would make most other directors blush with inferiority, it simply doesn't quite reach the heights of Bad Education or even Broken Embraces.
I think I prefer Almodovar's more layered works, and his love-letters to cinema. There's something more colorful and complex about those films, something that just grips me at my core and leaves me in awe.
Talk to Her is great, but it doesn't quite do that (and is strangely lacking the over-the-top primary color scheme). Anyway, without the comparison to Bad Education and Broken Embraces (and even All About My Mother and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown), I would definitely have nothing negative to say about the film.
It is, undeniably, (to narcissistically quote my recent Broken Embraces review) "another triumph for the genius Almodovar.".
