Review of Tales from the Golden Age (2009) by Sorin H — 17 Sep 2009
I came into this knowing virtually nothing about Romanian culture in this period. I was not only entertained (there's a lot of emphasis on humour), but had the wonderful experience of hearing & seeing this fantastic storytelling.
The short films tie in together smoothly to form a cohesive whole that relays various urban legends from life under the Ceaucescu dictatorship. While many details were certainly foreign to my own experience growing up in Canada, the stories are still relatable.
They deal in themes of love, humour, survival & pursuit of dreams- universal themes reflected in the stories of every culture. Above these common threads are overlaid the particular details of the era, the people's stories detailing life under Ceaucescu, which are fascinating to see & hear.
