Review of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990) by Joel J — 21 Oct 2009
Tales From The Darkside is a three part story that almost resembles a Creep Show rip-off, except that it changes a few things. First of all, George Romero and Stephen King only help in the writing instead of guiding the entire project.
It also isn't nearly as entertaining (only goes to show right?). The most redeeming aspect of the picture is the cast. Wow!! You get Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, and Christian Slater in the first story alone! Spice things up with a little Debbie Harry and you have yourself a sound cast.
I thought all three stories were creepy enough, but the trilogy certainly takes down hill steps as you go along. I always talk about this, and I think it rings true here again - it really depends on expectations.
I was a fan of the TV show and comic books, and I didn't expect much more from this film. I wasn't sitting in anticipation of an Argento classic, you know? This is a watchable picture, and certainly better than the Tales From The Crypt films (which was a much better TV show).
If you get a chance, watch the film. I just wouldn't break your back to find a copy.
