Review of Tales from the Crypt (1972) by Zachary C — 13 Jan 2012
Amicus almost scored a home run with Tales from the Crypt, an anthology of short segments adapted from stories which originally appeared in the EC Comics series Tales from the Crypt and the Vault of Horror.
The strongest segments are Poetic Justice (Peter Cushing is a kindly old man who is driven to suicide by a cruel neighbor but returns from the dead to seek revenge), Blind Alley (The patients at a home for the blind turn the tables on a barbaric administrator and build a maze of horrors to trap him), and Reflection of Death (A man cheating on his wife dies in a car accident and comes back as a decaying corpse who frightens everyone).
The only weak link is the first segment, All Through the House, which is a standard mad psycho tale about an escaped lunatic dressed as Santa Claus. Sir Ralph Richardson has an eerie presence as the Gate Keeper who reveals the fates of his five stranded visitors.
The twist at the end is grim but satisfying. Tales from the Crypt gets 4 out 5 torn-out hearts from me!
