When a director thinks in tableaux instead of moving images and drama, this kind of boring coffeebook movie will result: beautiful surface and some lovely bizarre visual ideas, but no tension, drama and characters to care about.
Even as a comment on the aesthetics of the 17th century fable and theatre this movie fails because it loves its splendid scenery so much.
