Review of Taking Woodstock (2009) by Jim C — 26 Feb 2010
I was a child in 1969, 11 years old, and we had 8 honest-to-goodness hippies who lived next door to us in a 1BR efficiency apartment. Add to it that Demetri Martin looks so much like a guy I used to have the biggest (I chose that word for GOOD reason ;-) ) crush on.
This was such a great film in that it portrayed the era so well. Some of my favorite actors are in this film, too, a few in much smaller roles than befits their capabilities, but I think that just shows how much they wanted to be part of this film; Eugene Levy as the landowner cum capitalist Max Yasgur, Liev Schreiber who played the drag queen security guard Vilma so PERFECTLY, Paul Dano as the VW Guy, Emile Hirsch as the burnt out Vietnam vet, Jonathan Groff in a perfectly nuanced performance as the suave promoter Michael, and Imelda Staunton as the paranoid antisocial Jewish concentration camp survivor mom.
But the best thing of all was how well each of their performances added to the whole. I'll definitely be up to see this movie again...and again.
