Review of Takers (2010) by Kish B — 20 Mar 2011
Heat.... The hip hop years...
Well made and acted for the most part, there is barely an original moment in this film but its kinda watchable because of this. Obssessed cop with a troubled personal life, check... Professional criminals.... Check... untrustworthy ex team members... Check.... Good clothes (especially hats)...Check...
We have seen it all before and whilst this has ambition, it doesn't touch the themes and loftier ideals that are tackled in Heat....From a casting perspective, TI Harris is plain annoying, Chris Brown is passable and Idris Elba seems to have marked himself as a one trick pony. Loved his work in The Wire, been unimpressed with what he has done since..... Matt Dillon is also totally wasted in this. Paul Walker seems to come out of this the best which I found totally surprising...
Action wise, the set pieces are fun but not all that exciting and come the end, the film as a whole doesn't really add up to much beyond offering up some solid unintentional laughs but it is strangely watchable and fun all the same....
