Review of Taken 2 (2012) by Tim W — 29 Jun 2018
Liam Neeson's family must wish they'd never met him. No matter where they go, they get kidnapped. Fortunately, Neeson's opposition, be it gangsters or corrupt police, are so inept that, even though you know he will triumph, he does so with such ease as to remove all tension and interest from the action.
Even the guards at the US Embassy couldn't hit a barn door at 40 paces, so his illegal foray onto US sovereign territory ends implausibly succesfully. And that, in a nutshell, is the chief problem here.
It's utterly implausible. That, and it's total lack of originality. From the roof top pursuits to the car chases taking in fruit, empty boxes and oil drums, we've seen it all before. Mind you, I did learn one useful thing.
Next time I'm in a crowded foreign city and I get separated from my family, I'll just chuck a few grenades around until they locate me through sound waves. Apparently, in Istanbul at least, no one cares if you do that.
Lonely Planet take note.
