Review of Take This Waltz (2011) by Cristian B — 29 Jul 2012
Though the movie meanders at times, thanks to strong performances and perceptive directing/writing by Polley, the movie winds up being honest, touching, and off-beat. Williams gives another stand-out performance, which conveys the inner conflict of her character.
She is presented as flawed and not always sympathetic, but Williams makes us feel for her anyway. There is strong work from the supporting cast, including Kirby, who exudes confidence and charisma. Rogen and Silverman, known for being wildly funny, tone down their antics and give surprisingly vulnerable performances.
Though Polley has some tonal and pacing issues with the story, she presents her characters as flawed and asks some tough questions about relationships and love. It's one of the more honest movies to come out about the fragility of love and the quest to find happiness.
