Review of Take This Waltz (2011) by Kate D — 27 Aug 2012
What started as cutesy and whimsical (a rickshaw guy who's really an artist??!!) soon turned more irritating as tantric adultery (geez!!!) set in. Maybe all this is intentional? But there is something jarring between small moments in their lives that suppose to make the film feels natural/real and the over-flowery and sometimes over-written dialogue because no one really talks like that in real life.
Or maybe I'm mixing with the wrong crowd. The film, so laden with symbolism, soon gets burdened by this weight and slowly sink. Had the film ended with the lake scene, this would be a 2.5 star film.
But the film refuses to be just another indie film that believes that ambiguous endings and truncated narrative will make it cool - and it continues and actually gets to make a point about the character(s).
And for that and that alone - not the performances (which are good) or the execution (more than competent with colours that jump out at you which makes everything looks oh-so-pretty) - that finally pushes this to a 3 star.
.. but only just.
