Review of Take the Money and Run (1969) by Austin D — 06 Nov 2007
You can tell this is Woody Allenâ??s directorial debut. While the brilliant hilarious writing is there, itâ??s pretty poorly directed. Allen is hilarious in this mockumentary about a criminal whoâ??s not cut out for crime.
Heâ??s very Chaplin-esque in this-very much playing off his ditzy awkwardness, while a the same time, he throws in some great jokes and dialogue. If Allen had a sitcom, this is what it would look like.
It felt very much like a TV show- loose, funny, but very minimal directing and not so good editing. But overall, this is a very funny debut to a brilliant career. Best scene -arguing about the spelling in the first bank robbery.
Hilarious!
